Who we are

The Master Musicians of Halifax are drawn from a collection of the top musicians in Halifax. We’ve all played together many times—in each other’s bands, on each other’s gigs, backing-up headliners, in recording sessions, and at countless live music events.

Throughout the year we’re all busy working gigs with various bands, tours, concerts, musical theatre, club work, corporate events, private parties, festivals, and house concerts . . . and now we’re having a blast playing together every Wednesday in July and August.

What and how we play

The show is produced by Mike Cowie, and in it you’ll hear a non-stop 90‑minute live music performance featuring a delightfully eclectic mix of musical styles—you’ll recognize all the music we play.

It’s all about the music!

This show is inspired by east coast Canadian folk music, traditional fiddle tunes, classic rock, R&B, operatic arias, Sinatra‑standards, blues, and classic country, among other styles. Soulful lead vocals, vocal harmonies, instrumental solos, and tight group ensemble playing are featured.

No song is ever played the same way twice. The rules are: be true to the song, be true to the group sound, and play your ass off. It’s all about the music.

What is a Master Musician?

Have their own individual sound and great technical proficiency on their instrument

Can read music and play by ear

Can play authentically many different styles of music

Can make the other musicians they play with sound better

Can hear and react to everything the other musicians are playing in real time

Can move an audience emotionally
